When your pet needs medication, keeping track of doses, schedules and refills can quickly become another thing on your to-do list. Whether your pet takes a daily medication, needs seasonal preventatives or has multiple prescriptions to manage, having a consistent routine can make a big difference.

The good news? A medication routine doesn't have to be complicated to work. With a little planning and a few simple habits, you can make managing your pet's medications feel like a natural part of your day.

The first step to building a routine is knowing exactly what your pet needs and when they need it.

Some medications are given once a day, while others may need to be administered multiple times a day or on a specific schedule. Certain medications also need to be given with food or at a particular time. Following your veterinarian's instructions is essential to making sure your pet gets the right medication at the right time.

Start by creating a simple medication schedule that includes the medication name, dosage, timing, special instructions, and refill date.

Having everything in one place makes it easier to stay organized and helps you avoid second-guessing the schedule.

Connect Medication Times to Everyday Habits

One of the easiest ways to remember your pet's medication is to connect it to something you already do every day.

Think about your existing routine. Do you feed your pet breakfast at the same time each morning? Take them for an evening walk? Get ready for bed around the same time every night?

Use these familiar moments as reminders for medication time, as long as they align with your veterinarian's instructions.

For example, you might give morning medication alongside breakfast if it can be taken with food or administer evening medication as part of your bedtime routine.

The goal is to make medication part of a routine you already have rather than adding another separate task to remember.

Consistency isn't just about remembering doses. It's also about helping your pet feel comfortable with the process.

Some pets take medication without a fuss, while others may need a little extra encouragement. If medication time is stressful, finding an approach that works for your pet can make it easier for everyone.

Depending on the medication, your veterinarian may be able to recommend different administration options or techniques. Some medications can be given with food or a treat, while others have specific instructions that need to be followed.

Choose a familiar, comfortable spot for medication time. Keeping the experience predictable can help your pet feel more at ease.

Praise, affection or a favorite treat can help create a more positive association with medication time, when appropriate for your pet and their medication.

Store medications and any necessary supplies together so you're not searching for everything when it's time for a dose. Always follow storage instructions on the medication label.

If your pet consistently refuses medication or you have trouble administering it, reach out to your veterinarian. They can help you explore options that may work better.

Running out of medication can interrupt an otherwise consistent routine. That's why it's helpful to think about refills before you're down to the last few doses.

Take a quick look at your pet's medications each week to see how much is left.

Knowing which medications need refills and which veterinary clinic prescribed them can make the process easier.

For medications and products you use regularly, recurring deliveries can help take refill reminders off your plate.

At Koala Health, we make it easier to manage your pet's prescriptions with convenient home delivery. We also coordinate with your veterinarian to confirm prescriptions and help keep things moving when it's time for a refill.

Building a pet medication routine that sticks doesn't mean getting everything perfect every day. It's about finding simple habits that make it easier to stay consistent and keeping the right support in place when things get busy.

With a clear schedule, helpful reminders and a plan for refills, managing your pet's medications can become a more manageable part of everyday life. And when you may need a little extra help, we're here for you.

Building a Pet Medication Routine That Sticks

Halloween is full of festive decorations, sweet treats and fun costumes, but some of the season’s traditions can pose risks for pets. Between tempting candy, unfamiliar decorations and a steady stream of trick-or-treaters, there’s a lot for dogs and cats to navigate.

Here are some common Halloween hazards to watch for and simple ways to protect your furry family members:

Halloween candy may be a treat for people, but many popular sweets are unsafe for pets. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats, with dark chocolate and baking chocolate posing particularly serious risks. Sugar-free candy and gum may also contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs.

Even candy that doesn't contain toxic ingredients can cause upset tummies, especially when pets eat large amounts. Candy wrappers can also present a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage if swallowed.

Store candy in closed containers or cabinets your pet cannot access. Remind children not to share Halloween treats with pets and keep trick-or-treat bags off the floor and out of reach. If your pet wants to join the fun, offer a pet-safe treat instead.

Spooky decorations help set the Halloween mood, but curious pets may see them as toys to chew, chase or investigate. Plastic spiders, fake cobwebs, dangling strings and small decorative objects can be tempting to play with but may cause choking or digestive problems if swallowed.

Place small decorations out of your pet's reach and secure electrical cords to keep them away from curious mouths. Choose battery-operated candles or LED lights instead of open flames, and keep pumpkins and other decorations stable so pets cannot easily knock them over. It's also worth checking that seasonal plants and decorative arrangements are pet-safe before bringing them into your home.

The constant doorbell ringing, unfamiliar voices and frequent opening and closing of the front door can be overwhelming for dogs and cats. Some pets may become anxious or excited, while others may try to hide or escape.

An open door also creates an opportunity for pets to slip outside unnoticed. Even pets who are usually calm around visitors may react differently when the house is busier than normal.

Set up a quiet, comfortable room away from the front door and busy areas where your pet can relax. Use a secure gate or closed door to prevent pets from rushing outside. Keep cats indoors, make sure dogs are securely leashed before going outside and check that your pet's identification tags and microchip information are up to date.

Halloween can disrupt your pet's usual routine. Changes in meal times, unfamiliar smells and sounds, and extra activity around the house may leave some pets feeling unsettled.

Dogs and cats often feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. Keeping familiar routines in place can help them navigate the excitement without becoming overwhelmed.

Stick to your pet's usual feeding, walking and bedtime schedule as much as possible. Give dogs a walk or play session earlier in the day to help them settle before evening activities begin, and provide cats with familiar hiding spots where they can retreat.

If your pet has a history of anxiety around loud noises or unfamiliar people, talk with your veterinarian ahead of time about ways to make the evening more comfortable.

Even with careful planning, accidents can happen. Knowing what to do if your pet gets into something they shouldn't can make a big difference.

Keep your veterinarian's contact information somewhere easy to find, along with the number for a local emergency veterinary hospital. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic or swallowed a potentially dangerous object, contact a veterinary professional right away for guidance.

A little planning goes a long way toward making Halloween fun for the whole family.

Halloween Hazards for Dogs and Cats

Preventative care is one of the simplest ways to help protect your pet’s health, but it works best when it stays part of their regular routine. Fleas, ticks and heartworms can pose serious health risks, and staying on schedule with your pet’s preventatives can help reduce those risks before they become a problem.

Whether your pet takes a monthly chew, uses a topical treatment or receives another type of preventative recommended by your veterinarian, consistency matters.

Flea, tick and heartworm preventatives are designed to work according to specific dosing schedules. Missing a dose or waiting too long between treatments can leave your pet without the intended protection.

Heartworm prevention is especially important to keep on schedule. Heartworm disease is spread through mosquito bites and can cause serious health problems. Because pets can be exposed even when they spend most of their time indoors, maintaining regular prevention is an important part of their ongoing care.

Fleas and ticks can also cause more than an occasional itch. Fleas can lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions, while ticks can transmit diseases that affect pets and, in some cases, people.

That’s why preventative care isn’t just about treating a problem after it appears.

Make Preventative Care Part of Their Routine

Remembering a monthly dose can be tricky, especially when life gets busy. Here are a few simple habits can make it easier to stay on track:

If your pet’s preventative is given monthly, choose a day that’s easy to remember. Giving their medication around the same time each month can make it easier to keep track of when their next dose is due.

Add your pet’s preventative to your phone or calendar with a recurring monthly reminder. If you have multiple pets, you can also set individual reminders to keep track of each pet’s medication schedule.

service, eligible medications can be sorted into individual date- and time-stamped pouches. Each pouch contains the medications your pet needs at that time, making it easier to keep track of their daily routine without sorting through multiple bottles.

Try connecting your pet’s preventative to something you already do every month. It could be the day you pay a bill, change an air filter or complete another recurring household task.

The more naturally their preventative fits into your routine, the easier it can be to remember.

If you realize you’ve missed a dose, don’t guess about what to do next. The right steps can depend on the specific preventative, how long it has been since the missed dose and your pet’s individual needs.

Check the medication’s instructions and reach out to your veterinarian if you’re unsure when to give the next dose or whether your pet needs additional care. Always follow the product’s directions and your veterinarian’s recommendations.

Your pet’s preventative care may only take a few minutes each month, but those small steps play an important role in protecting their long-term health.

At Koala Health, we make it easier to stay on top of your pet’s medication routine. From coordinating prescriptions with your veterinarian to delivering medications right to your door, we’re here to help make keeping up with their care a little simpler. Because when preventative care becomes part of the routine, it’s easier to keep your pet protected.

Why Consistency Matters in Your Pet’s Preventative Care

As the seasons change, your pet’s routine may change with them. Cooler weather, shifting schedules and more time indoors can all mean it’s a good time to take stock of your pet’s ongoing health needs.

From medications and preventatives to allergy care and upcoming vet appointments, a little preparation now can help keep your pet’s care on track throughout the fall.

Start by taking a look at your pet’s current medications. Are you getting close to a refill? Is anything set to run out in the next few weeks? If your pet takes medication regularly, checking your supply now can help you avoid a last-minute scramble.

It’s also a good time to make sure you’re following the dosing instructions provided by your veterinarian and that you know when your next refill is due. If anything about your pet’s medication has changed, reach out to your veterinary team before making adjustments.

Fall can bring changes in the environment that may affect pets with seasonal allergies. Ragweed and other outdoor allergens can linger into the fall, while leaves, mold and changes in indoor air can introduce new irritants.

If your pet is prone to allergies, keep an eye out for signs such as itching, licking, scratching, red or irritated skin, ear problems or changes in their usual behavior. If you notice symptoms returning or getting worse, talk with your veterinarian about whether your pet’s allergy care needs to be adjusted.

Keeping any prescribed allergy medications on hand can also make it easier to stay on top of your pet’s routine.

Fall is a good time to look ahead at your pet’s healthcare calendar. Check whether they have any upcoming appointments, vaccinations, lab work or medication monitoring scheduled.

If your pet has a chronic condition or takes ongoing medication, staying consistent with recommended checkups can help your veterinary team monitor their health and make changes to their care when needed.

You can also use this time to write down any questions or changes you’ve noticed since your pet’s last visit so you’re ready to bring them up at their next appointment.

Fall often means changes to the whole household’s schedule.

, changing work schedules and shorter days can affect when your pet eats, exercises and takes their medications.

If your pet takes medication at a specific time each day, consider how your new routine might affect their schedule. A consistent routine can make it easier to remember medications and notice when something seems different with your pet.

One of the easiest ways to stay ahead of your pet’s health needs is to check your supplies before they become urgent. Take inventory of medications, preventatives and other essentials your pet uses regularly.

If you’re getting close to needing a refill, reach out to your vet or pharmacy rather than waiting until you’re down to the last dose. Planning ahead can give you more time to coordinate a prescription and get everything delivered.

And when you need a hand managing your pet’s prescriptions, we’re here to help. From coordinating with your veterinary team to delivering medications right to your door, we make it easier to keep your pet’s care moving along.

Your Pet’s Fall Health Checklist

As pets get older, it’s normal for their routines and abilities to change. They may not run quite as far, take longer to get up in the morning or spend more time napping. But while some changes are a normal part of aging, slowing down can also be a sign that your pet is experiencing pain.

The challenge is that dogs and cats often hide discomfort. Instead of crying out or limping, they may simply behave a little differently. Knowing what to look for can help you recognize changes sooner and give your veterinarian the information they need to determine what’s going on.

Pain can look different from pet to pet, and some of the most important signs can be subtle. Changes in your pet’s everyday routine, movement or personality may be worth paying attention to, especially when they are new or becoming more noticeable.

You may notice your pet having more difficulty getting up or lying down. They might move more slowly, hesitate before climbing stairs or stop jumping onto furniture they used to enjoy. A dog may lose interest in longer walks or playing fetch, while a cat may stop jumping onto a favorite perch or spending time in certain areas of the house.

Changes in activity are another potential clue. A pet who is uncomfortable may sleep more, seem reluctant to move around or tire more quickly during activities they once enjoyed.

Behavior can also change when a pet is experiencing discomfort. A normally social pet may become withdrawn or irritable, or they may seem less comfortable being touched or handled. Some pets may become restless, pace or have trouble settling into a comfortable position.

It can be difficult to know whether your pet is simply getting older or experiencing a problem that needs attention. Aging itself is not a disease, and many senior pets continue to enjoy active, comfortable lives.

The most helpful thing you can do is pay attention to changes from your pet’s normal behavior.

For example, an older dog may naturally take more naps than they did when they were younger. But if they suddenly stop wanting to go on walks, struggle to climb stairs or seem uncomfortable getting up, it’s worth bringing those changes to your veterinarian.

The same applies to cats. A senior cat may sleep more, but suddenly avoiding the couch they used to jump onto or spending much more time hiding could indicate an underlying issue.

If you notice a new or persistent change in your pet’s behavior, movement, appetite or daily routine, it’s a good idea to talk with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can evaluate your pet, look for potential underlying causes and determine whether pain management may be appropriate.

Depending on the cause and your pet’s individual needs, treatment may involve medication, weight management, physical rehabilitation, environmental changes or other approaches.

You know your pet’s normal better than anyone. Paying attention to small changes can help you recognize when something may be wrong and give you an opportunity to involve your veterinarian early.

For pets who need ongoing pain management, staying consistent with their treatment plan is an important part of their care. Keeping medications on schedule and planning ahead for refills can make it easier to avoid interruptions.

, we can help make managing your pet’s medications more convenient with home delivery, refill support and coordination with your veterinary team. Because when your pet needs ongoing care, keeping their routine on track should be one less thing to worry about.

Is Your Pet Slowing Down or in Pain?

Pets tend to thrive on routine. Familiar patterns around meals, exercise, medication and time spent with you can help them know what to expect throughout the day.

A change in schedule does not necessarily mean your pet will have a hard time adjusting. However, sudden changes can sometimes lead to behaviors like restlessness, excessive vocalization or changes in eating and sleeping habits.

The goal is not to keep every day exactly the same. Instead, focus on keeping the most important parts of your pet's routine as consistent as possible.

If you know your schedule is going to change, start adjusting your pet's routine ahead of time when possible.

For example, if you'll need to leave for work earlier, gradually move your pet's morning feeding or walk earlier over several days. Small changes can be easier for your pet to adapt to than one sudden shift.

Even when your schedule changes, maintaining a few familiar routines can give your pet a sense of stability.

One routine that is especially important to maintain is your pet's medication schedule.

Whether your pet takes medication every day or on a specific schedule, giving it consistently can help you stay on track with their care. A busy morning or a change in who is home can make it easier to accidentally miss a dose.

Try connecting medication time to something you already do every day, such as your morning coffee, breakfast or your pet's evening meal. Keeping medication in a consistent, easy-to-remember place can also help.

Keeping up with medication is not just about remembering doses. It's also important to make sure you have enough medication on hand when you need it.

makes it easy to manage your pet's ongoing medications and keep their care moving with your routine.

A new work or school schedule may also mean your pet spends more time alone than they did during the summer.

If your pet is used to having someone around throughout the day, gradually increasing alone time can help them adjust. Before leaving, make sure they have access to fresh water and a comfortable place to rest. Depending on your pet, a favorite toy or enrichment activity can also help keep them occupied.

If your pet shows persistent signs of distress when left alone, talk with your veterinarian about ways to support them.

Most pets will adjust to a new schedule with time. Still, it's worth paying attention if you notice significant or lasting changes in their behavior, appetite, sleep, bathroom habits or energy level.

Your pet cannot tell you when something feels off, so changes in their normal routine can sometimes be an important clue. If you're concerned about a change, your veterinarian can help determine whether it's simply an adjustment to a new routine or something that needs attention.

A little preparation now can help you settle into your new routine while keeping your pet's care on track.

How to Help Your Pet Adjust to a New Schedule

Managing chronic dermatology cases isn't just about selecting the right treatment plan — it's about helping pet owners stick with it.

During Koala's recent sponsored webinar, "When the Itch Won't Quit: Cultivating Compliance in Your Derm Cases," board-certified veterinary dermatologist Dr. Julia E. Miller, DACVD shared practical strategies for improving long-term compliance through stronger communication and a whole-clinic approach to patient care.

Here are five key takeaways from the discussion.

1. Dermatology Compliance Starts with the Entire Veterinary Team

Successful dermatology cases don't rely on one conversation with the veterinarian. Every interaction, from the front desk to the exam room, helps shape client experience and understanding.

When client service representatives, technicians and doctors all reinforce the same message, pet parents receive consistent guidance throughout their visit. That consistency builds trust and makes long-term treatment plans easier to follow.

One of the biggest opportunities to improve compliance is during the initial appointment.

Helping pet parents understand that many allergic skin conditions require ongoing management, not just a one-time fix, creates realistic expectations from the beginning. When pet parents know what the journey looks like, they're more likely to stay engaged with treatment,

Follow-up care is a critical part of managing chronic dermatology patients.

Rather than asking clients to remember to call later, pre-booking the recheck appointments before they leave the clinic helps keep treatment plans on track and creates natural opportunities to evaluate progress, adjust therapies and answer questions.

4. Prepare Pet Parents for Allergic Flares

Even with an effective treatment plan, flare-ups can happen.

Talking about this possibility before it occurs helps reduce frustration and uncertainty when symptoms return. Pet parents who understand what to expect are often better prepared to recognize changes, reach out appropriately and continue following the recommended plan instead of assuming treatment has failed.

Technicians play a vital role in educating pet parents, reinforcing recommendations and answering day-to-day questions.

Providing ongoing education and clinical resources helps create a knowledgeable, confident team that can deliver consistent messaging across every stage of the patient journey. The stronger the team's understanding, the stronger the client (and patient!) experience becomes.

Better Communication Leads to Better Outcomes

Dermatology cases often require months (or even years!) of partnership between veterinary teams and pet owners. Improving compliance isn't about having one perfect conversation; it's about creating a consistent experience at every touchpoint.

, we're proud to support continuing education that helps veterinary teams strengthen client relationships, improve adherence to treatment plans and ultimately deliver better outcomes for pets.

Thank you to Dr. Julia E. Miller and the

team for an engaging discussion and for sharing practical strategies that clinics can begin implementing today. Didn’t get a chance to tune in?

Top Five Ways to Improve Compliance in Veterinary Dermatology

Finding a tick on your dog or cat can be an unsettling moment, but knowing exactly what to do next makes all the difference. While it’s natural to feel worried when you spot fleas or ticks, the key to protecting your pet lies in a steady hand and a clear plan. Whether your pet is a frequent trail hiker or a backyard explorer, knowing how to handle these parasites is an essential part of responsible pet ownership.

A common misconception among pet owners is that ticks are only a problem during warm spring and summer months. In reality, ticks are a year-round risk for dogs and cats, particularly in many parts of the United States where milder winters allow tick activity to continue. According to the

Because ticks transmit a wide variety of disease agents to pets and people and are active throughout the year, tick control must be practiced consistently to protect the health of the pet and to prevent untreated pets from bringing ticks – which may then infest people - into the home.”

This ongoing exposure matters because ticks are capable of transmitting several serious tick-borne diseases in dogs. These infections are not always obvious immediately following the bite.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

notes that symptoms of tick-borne illness may take 7 to 21 days to appear after a bite, possibly longer. This delay makes prevention especially important, since treatment is often most effective when started early.

Because of this incubation period, pets may go through what veterinarians sometimes refer to as a “silent infection window.” During this time, a dog or cat may appear completely normal while the infection is developing internally. By the time more noticeable clinical signs of tick-borne disease appear, the illness may already be well established and require more intensive treatment. This is why consistent year-round tick prevention for pets is far more effective than reacting after a bite occurs.

The CDC recommends checking your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors. Ticks prefer warm, hidden areas of the body where they can feed undisturbed. On dogs, pay close attention to the area in and around the ears, around the eyelids, under the collar, under the front legs, between the toes, between the back legs and around the tail. For cats, the same areas apply, though cats will often groom ticks off before you spot them, making prevention and veterinary-recommended repellents especially important.

Ticks crawling on or biting a pet can be hard to spot, especially for breeds with long and dark fur. Take your time and use your fingertips to feel through the coat rather than relying on sight alone.

If you find a tick on your pet, the priority is to remove the feeding tick as soon as possible. Because the risk of pathogen transmission increases the longer a tick remains attached to its host, acting quickly is the most effective way to protect your pet’s bloodstream from infection. A tick’s anatomy is designed for a secure hold, featuring a one-piece body equipped with harpoon-like barbs on the mouthparts, supported by crab-like legs and a sticky, cement-like secretion that anchors it firmly in place.

provides clear, vet-informed guidance on how to remove a tick from your dog using fine-point tweezers or a tick removal hook. They advise spreading your dog's fur, grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible with fine-point tweezers and pulling straight upward in a slow, steady motion to prevent the mouth parts from breaking off and remaining embedded in the skin.

Successfully removing a tick is an important first step, but it does not eliminate the risk of infection; it only reduces it. Because tick-borne illnesses can take days or even weeks to develop, it’s important to closely monitor both the bite site and your pet’s overall health for several weeks following removal.

In some cases, preserving the tick can also be helpful. Veterinary guidance from the

notes that keeping the tick may assist with later identification if illness occurs:

“Save the removed tick, wrapped in cellophane tape or in a vial with alcohol, in case it is needed for identification later. The tape or vial can be sealed in a plastic bag, labeled with the date found, and frozen. If illness develops, identification of the tick and the day it was discovered may aid the physician in recognizing which infection was most likely transmitted and allow prompt, appropriate treatment.”

Storing the tick in this way can provide valuable context for your veterinarian or physician, helping them better assess potential disease risks and make more informed decisions if symptoms appear later.

Ticks may be small and hard to spot, but the health risks they carry are significant and often delayed. With the right knowledge and consistent habits, you can dramatically reduce your pet’s risk of serious illness. From daily tick checks and quick removal to close monitoring in the weeks that follow, every step you take plays a role in protecting your pet’s long-term health.

remains the most effective strategy for all pets. Year-round tick control, combined with routine inspections and quick action when a tick is found, helps break the cycle of exposure before disease can take hold. Staying calm and informed ensures you will respond quickly and confidently when that time comes.

makes it easier to stay consistent with your pet’s prevention routine, so you’re always prepared when ticks are waiting to attach. By combining reliable protection with simple, proactive habits, you give your pet a stronger defense against tick-borne disease. Small, consistent actions today can go a long way in helping your dog or cat stay healthy, active and protected throughout the year.

Found a Tick? Here's What to Do Next

As spring arrives, environmental allergens begin to rise, triggering symptoms that are uncomfortable for many pets. When pollen and other allergens are released into the environment, dogs and cats can go from enjoying time outside to feeling uncomfortable every day. If your pet is scratching nonstop, rubbing their face or waking up with watery eyes, seasonal allergies are likely the cause. Recognizing the symptoms early and understanding what is happening in their body can make a meaningful difference in their comfort and overall quality of life.

An allergy is an exaggerated immune response to a typically harmless substance known as an allergen. These allergens are often proteins found in plants, insects, animals or certain foods. With repeated exposure over time, ranging from months to years, the immune system can become sensitized. Once this sensitization occurs, future exposure can trigger an overactive inflammatory response in the body, leading to the clinical signs seen in allergic pets (

A common misconception among pet owners is that allergens remain outdoors, but in reality, pollen and other microscopic particles easily enter the home through open windows and doors. Once indoors, these allergens can linger in the environment, meaning even indoor dogs and cats may experience ongoing exposure and symptoms during peak allergy seasons. Although dogs are diagnosed more frequently, both dogs and cats can be affected by seasonal allergies. Symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over time with repeated exposure as the immune system becomes increasingly reactive, with mild seasonal itching potentially progressing into more persistent or severe discomfort in later years if not properly managed.

Allergy symptoms in pets often differ from those seen in humans. While people commonly develop sneezing and watery eyes, dogs and cats are more likely to show signs through their skin. The most common indicator of spring allergies is persistent itching. They may scratch under their legs, rub their faces against furniture or lick and chew obsessively at their paws. Ear inflammation and recurrent ear infections are also symptoms of seasonal allergies. Pets may shake their heads or scratch at their ears, and these symptoms should be taken seriously and evaluated by a veterinarian (

One of the more serious cases linked to spring allergens is canine atopic dermatitis, a chronic and intensely itchy skin disease triggered by environmental allergens. According to

Cornell University's Riney Canine Health Center

, atopic dermatitis may affect as much as 10 to 15 percent of the dog population, with dogs typically beginning to show signs between six months and three years of age.

The good news is that spring pet allergies are very manageable with the right approach. Managing a pet with seasonal allergies requires a combination of therapies alongside frequent communication between the veterinary team and the pet's family. For pets with moderate to severe seasonal allergy symptoms, veterinarians have several proven prescription options. Veterinarians may recommend anti-itch medications such as

, an oral chewable approved for dogs, or

, an oral immunosuppressant medication available for both dogs and cats that can take around a month for effects to be seen and is intended for long-term allergy control. For cats, medication options are more limited. Some feline allergies can be managed with daily low doses of immunosuppressive drugs such as

Keep in mind, these medications may cause side effects and should only be used under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian, with appropriate monitoring throughout treatment. Working closely with your veterinary team, tracking your pet's symptoms across seasons, and staying consistent with treatment is what makes the biggest difference in long-term comfort and quality of life.

While prescription treatment is an important part of managing spring allergies, what pet owners do at home between veterinary visits matters just as much.
